One positioning engine,
two ways to compute location.

At the heart of the NAO® Suite are two positioning engines that turn raw signals into a precise, real-time indoor position - NAO® Mobile SDK, which computes location on the device, and NAO® Track, which computes it in the infrastructure.

Definition

A positioning engine is the software that turns signals - BLE, Wi-Fi, GNSS and motion sensors - into a real-time indoor position. In the NAO® Suite it exists in two forms: NAO® Mobile SDK (computed on the smartphone) and NAO® Track (computed in the infrastructure, RTLS).

Same job, computed in two different places

Both engines take signals and produce a real-time indoor position. The difference is where the calculation happens - and that single choice shapes everything from privacy to the kind of use case each one is best at.

FAQ

Positioning engine, in plain answers

What is a positioning engine in the NAO® Suite?
A positioning engine is the software that transforms raw signals - including BLE, Wi-Fi, GNSS and motion sensors - into a real-time indoor position. The NAO® Suite provides two complementary positioning engines: NAO® Mobile SDK, which computes the position directly on the mobile device, and NAO® Track, the RTLS engine that computes positions from infrastructure-collected signals.
What's the difference between NAO® Mobile SDK and NAO® Track?
The difference is where the position is computed. >NAO® Mobile SDK calculates location directly on smartphones and smartwatches, making it ideal for indoor navigation, wayfinding and location-aware mobile applications. NAO® Track calculates positions server-side from BLE signals collected by the RTLS infrastructure, making it suitable for large-scale asset tracking, workforce safety and operational analytics.
Does it require dedicated infrastructure?
NAO® Mobile SDK is designed to work with existing BLE-enabled infrastructure and mobile-device sensors. NAO® Track relies on the NAO® RTLS infrastructure, including NAO® BlueSpot and NAO® BlueListener, together with compatible BLE-enabled enterprise networks such as Cisco, HPE Aruba, Fortinet and Extreme Networks. This approach builds on existing infrastructure rather than replacing it.
What accuracy can it achieve?
NAO® Mobile SDK delivers a stable real-time position (X, Y and floor) with indoor/outdoor continuity. NAO® Track provides room-level to zone-level positioning, depending on the deployment and operational requirements.
Is the position computed on the device or on a server?
It depends on the positioning engine. NAO® Mobile SDK computes location directly on the mobile device, helping reduce latency and limiting data exposure. NAO® Track computes positions centrally on NAO® Cloud or NAO® Server, enabling large-scale RTLS deployments and centralized supervision.
Is it suitable for healthcare and other regulated environments?
Yes. Both positioning engines support secure deployments with encrypted communications and authenticated access. NAO® Mobile SDK performs positioning directly on the device, while NAO® Track can be deployed on NAO® Server to support organizations requiring local hosting, data governance and regulatory compliance.
Which platforms does the SDK support?
NAO® Mobile SDK provides native Android and iOS SDKs for smartphones and smartwatches. It also includes deployment and calibration tools such as NAO® Logger, helping accelerate testing and large-scale rollouts.
How is NAO® Track's location data consumed?
Computed positions are exposed through REST APIs and real-time MQTT interfaces, allowing third-party applications and business systems to consume location data. NAO® Track also feeds applications such as NAO® Viewer for supervision and NAO® Flow for analytics.
Can NAO® Mobile SDK and NAO® Track work together?
Yes. The two positioning engines are complementary components of the NAO® Suite. Mobile applications using NAO® Mobile SDK can operate alongside assets and devices tracked by NAO® Track, providing a unified location platform for navigation, operational tracking and analytics.
Can it be deployed in the cloud or on-premise?
NAO® Track supports deployment through NAO® Cloud or NAO® Server, enabling SaaS, on-premise or hybrid architectures according to operational, security and compliance requirements.
What scale can it handle?
NAO® Track is designed for large-scale RTLS deployments across hospitals, airports, industrial facilities, ports and ships. Its modular architecture supports the tracking of large numbers of assets, devices and users across single or multiple sites.
