The hardware layer
that puts location on the map.

Every RTLS deployment needs a physical layer on-site. Pole Star's is built from three complementary components - tags worn or attached to tracked objects, NAO® BlueSpot beacons that emit calibrated reference signals, and NAO® BlueListener gateways that capture all signals and relay them to the engine.

Definition

The RTLS infrastructure is the on-site hardware that makes indoor location possible. In the NAO® Suite: tags are worn by staff or attached to assets (the tracked element); NAO® BlueSpot is a programmable BLE beacon (the emitter); and NAO® BlueListener is a BLE gateway (the sensor) that forwards all signals to NAO® Track for real-time position computation.

The three components

One is tracked, one emits, one listens

Every indoor location deployment is built from three complementary hardware roles. Tags are the tracked element - worn by staff or attached to assets. NAO® BlueSpot broadcasts calibrated reference signals. NAO® BlueListener captures everything and hands it to the engine. Together they turn any building into a real-time location infrastructure.

How it works

From a broadcast to a position on the map

The infrastructure captures signals; NAO® Track turns them into positions; and NAO® Viewer and NAO® Flow make them useful. The capture layer relies on NAO® BlueListener gateways, which collect BLE signals and forward them to NAO® Track for position calculation.

FAQ

RTLS infrastructure, answered

Beacons & gateways
What's the difference between NAO® BlueSpot and NAO® BlueListener?
NAO® BlueSpot is a programmable BLE beacon that broadcasts calibrated Bluetooth Low Energy signals. NAO® BlueListener is a BLE gateway that passively captures those signals and forwards the measurements to NAO® Track. Together, they provide the physical RTLS infrastructure required for indoor positioning.
Why are both NAO® BlueSpot and NAO® BlueListener required?
The two devices perform complementary functions. NAO® BlueSpot emits calibrated BLE signals, while NAO® BlueListener captures those signals and forwards them to NAO® Track, which computes the real-time position of people and assets. Together, they create the sensing infrastructure that enables accurate indoor positioning.
What accuracy and range does NAO® BlueSpot offer?
NAO® BlueSpot V5 is designed for high-accuracy indoor positioning, with a configurable BLE transmission range of up to 100 metres and adjustable transmission power to suit different deployment environments.
How long does the NAO® BlueSpot battery last, and is it rugged?
Battery life is up to 10 years, depending on the transmission profile. Its IP65-rated enclosure makes it suitable for demanding indoor and outdoor environments, including industrial facilities, logistics sites and transport hubs.
Which BLE frame formats are supported?
NAO® BlueSpot supports iBeacon™, Eddystone™, Eddystone-TLM and Pole Star's proprietary BLE frame. NAO® BlueListener detects standard BLE advertising frames, ensuring interoperability with enterprise BLE deployments.
Which network infrastructures are compatible?
NAO® BlueSpot and NAO® BlueListener integrate with BLE-enabled enterprise environments, including Cisco Spaces, HPE Aruba, Fortinet and Extreme Networks, making deployment straightforward within existing infrastructures.
How does NAO® BlueListener send data to the positioning engine?
NAO® BlueListener collects BLE signal measurements, including RSSI, and securely forwards them via Ethernet or Wi-Fi using MQTT. NAO® Track then processes these measurements to calculate real-time indoor positions.
Can the infrastructure be deployed in the cloud or on-premise?
Yes. The infrastructure is managed through NAO® Cloud or NAO® Server, allowing deployments in SaaS, on-premise or hybrid environments according to security, governance and operational requirements.
Are firmware updates and maintenance performed remotely?
Yes. Both devices support Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates, remote configuration and centralized monitoring through NAO® Cloud or NAO® Server, minimizing on-site maintenance.
Is the infrastructure secure and suitable for mission-critical environments?
Yes. Communications with the NAO® platform are secured using SSL/TLS, access is authenticated, and deployments support GDPR-compliant data management. The infrastructure is designed for continuous operation in demanding environments such as hospitals, airports, industrial facilities and cruise ships.
Tags
What is the role of a BLE tag in an RTLS deployment?
A BLE tag is the tracked element in an RTLS system. It broadcasts a continuous Bluetooth Low Energy signal that is captured by the infrastructure - NAO® BlueListener gateways or existing BLE-enabled access points - and forwarded to NAO® Track, which computes the tag's real-time indoor position. One tag is required per tracked object or person.
What tag form factors does Pole Star offer?
Pole Star offers two main form factors: the Asset Tag, designed to be attached to equipment, trolleys and shared devices using adhesive, clip or screw mounting; and the Badge Tag, worn by staff on a lanyard or ID badge clip, which includes a single-press duress button for emergency alerting.
Do tags require pairing or configuration at the point of use?
No. Tags broadcast continuously once activated and are read automatically by the infrastructure. No user action is required at the point of use - there is no pairing, no manual check-in and no app to open. Configuration is handled remotely via NAO® Logger or Over-The-Air updates before deployment.
